- The island is a marine volcano, and much of it is underwater.

- 3. The inner crater was formed during the 1981 eruption
- The volcano has poisonous fumes.
1.The word “volcano” comes from the Roman name “Vulcan” – the Roman god of fire.
2.Lava can reach 1,250°C and has the potential to burn everything in its path! If you used a glass thermometer to take the temperature it would melt.
3. Volcanoes are often found at meeting points of what are called “tectonic plates”. These plates are pieces of the Earth’s surface that fit together just like a jigsaw puzzle.
4. Volcanoes aren’t only found on the boundaries of tectonic plates, though. They can also occur over “mantle plumes” – super hot areas of rock inside the Earth.
